The Homeschooler's Book of Lists

After we began homeschooling, I looked everywhere for a resource like this and couldn't find one. I thought it would be so great to have facts, dates, names, places, etc. all in one place so that I could access the information while we were doing school in ONE book without having to go to the Internet to look something up. Now the book is available through local bookstores, many book catalogs, and online! Here are examples of some of the lists included in the book: * Important Dates in History * Famous Scientists * Major Inventions * Nobel Prize Winners * Renowned Artists * Mathematical Formulas * Word Origins There are over 250 lists! Two chapters are specifically devoted to help the home educator better organize your thinking, schoolwork, and resources. For this, there are lists on: * Homeschool Methods (and how you can use this book with each one) * Reading Lists for various age groups * Checklists that you can use to keep track of books you have to make it easier when you go to used curriculum sales |
There are many neat things about this book. Here are some other things that perhaps you didn't know!
* You can copy lists for your own home use, family use, or even for classes you might teach in a co-op setting!
* You can order the book through Bethany House's website at www.bethanyhouse.com and type "homeschool" in the search box.
* Visit www.homeschoolstore.com and type "sonya haskins" in the search box. It pulls the book up right away. While you're on the site, browse through the other great homeschool titles this website has to offer!
* An easy-to-use CD comes with each book. Use the CD to print off lists. There are countless reasons you may want to do this, but here are a few:
| b |
Give a hardcopy of lists to your children to keep with their own schoolwork. They can highlight portions of the printouts and note the date they need to have memorization work completed. |
|
| b |
If you have a large family, give each child a copy of a particular list pertaining to the subject you are studying so that everyone can have a quick, easy reference for answering questions. |
|
| b |
Print reading lists for each child (according to age group) and have them highlight or cross out the books they've read. |
|

Print Caldecott, Newbery, and other book lists for yourself, check off the books you have, and give a copy of the lists to friends so that they can help you look for the items you're missing! |
Now, if you've read all this and you're still trying to figure out what is so offensive about it and caused all the fiasco with the local public library, good luck! The book is a wonderful resource for all parents and students - those who are homeschooled and those who are not. The local superintendent and county mayor just don't like homeschooling because it is threatening to them. Read the whole story in my blog.

I had a bird checklist in the original manuscript, but it was way too long to include in the final version of the book. That checklist is located here and you can print this out to use at home. This is meant to be used primarily for amateur birdwatching with children. I hope you find it useful.
